At just 18 years old, Stevenson took to the roads of South Australia for the very first time at a WorldTour race. This was no ordinary day; he found himself part of a breakaway group during one of the toughest stages the Tour Down Under has ever featured. As a member of the Australian national team, he rode alongside six experienced professionals from both WorldTour and ProTeam backgrounds. His sports director, Martin Barras, had given him straightforward instructions: "do the bare minimum you can get away with." And that’s precisely what he did. However, as Barras recounts, the more experienced cyclists quickly caught onto his strategy.
"As he's trying to skip turns, the WorldTour guys are backing him out of the break," Barras explained to Escape. One veteran rider even pulled him aside to say, "Listen, you're in the WorldTour now – you take solid turns like everybody else." To this, Stevenson's cheeky response was, "Mate, I'm still in school!" This moment not only highlights his youth but also showcases his lighthearted yet competitive spirit.
Barras went on to commend Stevenson's performance, calling it "very, very impressive." Being the youngest rider in the entire race by over two years, Stevenson managed to hold his own against seasoned competitors, only being reeled in approximately 25 kilometers before the finish line, as the UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad ramped up the pace.
