While he's shown an ability to limit hard contact (averaging a respectable 87.7 mph exit velocity and a 34% hard-hit rate), his strikeout and walk rates leave much to be desired. He's only fanned 15.5% of batters faced while walking 10.1%, numbers that fall well below league average.
But here's where it gets interesting: Shuster's fastball velocity, sitting between 90-92 mph as a starter, ticked up to 92.6 mph when he transitioned to a full-time relief role last season. Could a permanent move to the bullpen unlock his potential? Or is there still room for him to develop as a starter, perhaps refining his slider and changeup, both of which currently hover in the low 80s?
The Cardinals, with openings in both their rotation and bullpen, are in a position to experiment. Their current rotation picture includes Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy, Dustin May, and Kyle Leahy, with Andre Pallante potentially factoring in as a swingman. Trade acquisitions Richard Fitts (acquired in the Sonny Gray deal) and Hunter Dobbins (part of the Willson Contreras trade) join prospects like Quinn Mathews, Brycen Mautz, and Tink Hence as potential rotation options for 2026.
In the bullpen, veteran JoJo Romero (likely to be traded before spring training) and 30-year-old rookie Nick Raquet, who made his MLB debut in 2025, are the only relievers currently on the 40-man roster.
