Luana, a category two cyclone, made landfall on Saturday, bringing chaos to the remote communities of the Dampier Peninsula. As it moved inland across the Kimberley region, the ex-tropical system left a trail of destruction in its wake.
The Impact on Mercedes Cove
Pat and her husband, David, who operate Mercedes Cove Exclusive Retreat, an Aboriginal-owned business, were in Broome when the cyclone struck. The damage to their family home was extensive, with the roof torn off and the ceiling collapsing into the kitchen and living areas.
"It's devastating to see the place we built with our own hands in such a state," Pat shared. "We had just finished restoring the roof after the last cyclone, and now this. The wind was so powerful it ripped the roof right off."
The managers on-site described the experience as "frightening and terrifying." They were unable to assess the damage for hours due to the intense winds.
But there's a silver lining; the accommodation for tourists remained unaffected, ensuring the business can continue to operate.
Precious Memories
For Pat, Mercedes Cove holds more than just business value. It's a place filled with cherished memories of her family, friends, and retreat guests over the past two decades.
"My husband built this place 20 years ago, and we've had the most wonderful times here with our children and grandchildren. It's heartbreaking to see it like this, but we're determined to rebuild and create new memories," she said.
The Path Forward
DFES Kimberley Superintendent Leon Gardiner confirmed structural damage at Mercedes Cove and assured that emergency services are on standby to provide assistance if needed.
The tropical low is expected to move south through the Kimberley, Pilbara, and southern interior over the coming days, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and flooding to these regions.
"It's important for people in these areas to stay informed and prepared," Gardiner emphasized.
