In an exhilarating display of teamwork, Taiwanese tennis veteran Hsieh Su-wei partnered with Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko to claim the title at the WTA Brisbane International women’s doubles tournament. This victory, which took place on January 10, was marked by the duo's impressive performance throughout the final match.
The top-seeded team showcased their dominance by defeating the Australian Ellen Perez and Spain's Cristina Bucsa in straight sets, making it look effortless. From the very beginning of the first set, Hsieh and Ostapenko seized control of the game, establishing a strong lead of 3-0 after breaking their opponents' serve early on. They skillfully navigated through three break points against them, ultimately clinching the first set with a score of 6-2.
As they entered the second set, Hsieh and Ostapenko continued their strong momentum, swiftly advancing to a commanding 4-0 lead. They concluded the match decisively with a 6-1 score in the second set, underscoring their prowess on the court.
This triumph at the Brisbane tournament, recognized as a WTA 500 event, not only symbolizes a significant achievement for Hsieh but also represents her first title alongside Ostapenko. At 40 years old, this win is expected to boost her confidence as she prepares for the upcoming Australian Open.
Hsieh has already made a name for herself in women’s doubles, having previously secured a total of 36 titles on the WTA Tour with nine different partners. Notably, she has enjoyed her greatest success with China's Peng Shuai, with whom she won 12 titles, and Barbora Strycova, with whom she claimed 10 titles. With Ostapenko now becoming the tenth player to join Hsieh in lifting a WTA trophy, this victory further solidifies Hsieh's reputation as a highly versatile and skilled doubles specialist.
