Indigo Crisis 2025: What Happened and What It Means for Indian Aviation (2026)

Imagine a scenario where a single airline's actions plunge an entire nation's aviation system into chaos. This is the story of Indigo, India's largest private airline, and the crisis it sparked during the peak travel season of December.

The disruption caused by Indigo has left a trail of distressed passengers in its wake. Social plans, holiday dreams, and business trips were all upended. Medical patients were left agonizing, senior citizens were stranded, and even defense personnel stationed at the Siachen Glacier found themselves midway, unable to reach their much-needed break in the south. The impact was felt across India, with countless untold stories at airports nationwide.

What's intriguing is that Indigo's international flights were relatively unaffected, with cancellations estimated at less than 10%. The reason? International flights bring in higher revenue and have tougher passenger compensation rules.

The airline's official explanation was 'unforeseen operational challenges,' citing technology glitches, schedule changes, and weather conditions. However, the real issue lay in their misinterpretation of updated crew rostering rules, known as Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). These rules, implemented by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aimed to regulate flight crew duty hours, aligning with global safety practices.

The regulations, proposed in 2024 and implemented on November 1, 2025, included an increase in the mandatory weekly rest period for pilots from 36 to 48 hours, a reduction in midnight to early morning landings from six to two per week, restricted pilot flying hours on night flights, and personal leave not counting towards the 48-hour rest period.

Despite appeals to the airline's management and directives from the DGCA, the meltdown continued. Even with temporary waivers granted to Indigo as a one-time measure, pilot bodies are rightly concerned about the dilution of safety measures and crew welfare.

This crisis raises important questions about the aviation market, a private airline-run duopoly, and the need for better passenger compensation and rights. The regulator must ensure stringent monitoring of all airlines, regardless of their size, to prevent such chaos from occurring again.

And this is where it gets controversial... With the issue reaching Parliament, the question remains: Why was this disorder allowed to unfold, and what can be done to prevent it in the future?

What are your thoughts on this crisis? Do you think the aviation market needs more regulation, or is there another solution? Let's discuss in the comments!
