Imagine a world where everyone shines, regardless of their challenges. That's the vision of a remarkable young woman in Carbon County, Utah. High school sophomore and Miss Sego Lily's Teen, Bentley Bennett, is taking a stand to create a truly inclusive space, where individuals with special needs are celebrated and given the same opportunities as everyone else.
Bentley's journey began with her own experiences in pageantry. Having participated in several pageants herself, she realized that not everyone has the chance to experience the joy and confidence that comes with it.
"I wanted to create a pageant that could give them the opportunity to compete in it and not feel like they're any less than," Bentley explained. This led her to organize the all-abilities pageant, aptly named "Crowning Confidence," which aligns with her service initiative, "Confidence in Yourself." The goal? To empower everyone to feel confident and accepted, no matter their circumstances.
The pageant is scheduled for Saturday, January 10th, at the Price Civic Auditorium. Bentley is ensuring that the event will be filled with the same glamour and excitement as any other pageant. Contestants will have the opportunity to get their hair and makeup done, showcase their outfits of choice, and share their unique talents.
This initiative stems from a deeply personal place for Bentley. She's openly shared her own struggles with confidence and feeling accepted, emphasizing that it's a battle she continues to fight. Her mother, Nicole Bennett, expressed immense pride in Bentley's progress, highlighting how she's using her experiences to positively impact others.
Bentley's dedication extends beyond the pageant. She volunteers at the Castle Valley Center, a school for students with special needs, where she leads a dance class. "I love seeing all of them shine when you give them the chance to shine," she said. This passion is a driving force behind her pageant, as she wants to give these children the opportunity to participate and feel celebrated.
The Price City officials are also showing their support for Bentley's efforts. The Price City Council waived the $250 fee for the auditorium and even made a donation of the same amount.
Bentley's ambition is to make the all-abilities pageant an annual event in Carbon County. Registration for participants is open until December 12th. She is also seeking donations and sponsors to support the event.
But here's where it gets inspiring... Bentley's story is a testament to the power of empathy and inclusion. It's a reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
And this is the part most people miss... The impact of such an event goes far beyond the day itself. It fosters a sense of community, builds self-esteem, and challenges societal norms. It teaches us that true beauty lies in embracing our differences.
