The IT job market in Bangladesh presents a fascinating paradox: while the country boasts a significant number of IT graduates, the job market remains largely unforgiving, with many graduates struggling to find employment. This situation is not merely a case of underemployment or a lack of skills; it's a complex interplay of curriculum design, industry expectations, and economic realities. In my opinion, the root cause of this issue lies in the disconnect between academic education and the practical demands of the IT industry, which is further exacerbated by the rapid pace of technological change and the evolving nature of job requirements. What makes this particularly fascinating is the interplay between the educational system and the job market, where both sides are struggling to adapt to each other's needs. The IT sector in Bangladesh is facing a structural mismatch, with graduates not meeting industry standards and companies unable to value the skills they do possess. This situation is not unique to Bangladesh; it's a global trend that reflects the challenges of aligning education with the ever-changing demands of the job market. From my perspective, the solution lies in a collaborative effort between academia and industry. Universities need to place greater emphasis on practical application and real-world problem-solving, while students must take responsibility for their own skill development and seek opportunities to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The arrival of AI has only compounded these challenges, as the line between candidates with genuine understanding and those who can generate impressive AI-assisted outputs has become increasingly blurred. Strong fundamentals and the ability to defend one's own work have become more important than ever. The paradox of employment faced by IT graduates is a global issue, with companies demanding experience that fresh graduates cannot provide. This catch-22 has been tackled in India by large IT companies that built enormous campus recruitment and training programs, creating a direct pathway from final year to employment. However, in Bangladesh, the situation is more complex, with freelancers generating remittances but contributing little to the local economy. The reasons for this are not mysterious: entry-level software developers in Bangladesh earn significantly less than their counterparts in India or Sri Lanka, and the lack of training and support from companies exacerbates the problem. The solution, I believe, lies in a more holistic approach that addresses the needs of both academia and industry. By fostering stronger collaboration through internships, guest lectures, industry projects, and curriculum feedback, we can significantly improve graduate readiness and create a more sustainable and productive IT job market in Bangladesh.
