A Troubled State's Hope: Can a Taekwondo Teacher Bring Peace to Manipur?

Manipur, a state with a rich history of armed resistance, has been scarred by recent clashes between its diverse communities. As the sun sets on a year of direct federal rule, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a black belt in taekwondo, steps into the role of chief minister. But here's where it gets controversial: can a politician with a martial arts background truly bring peace to this troubled region?
Singh's journey into politics is an intriguing one. Despite his long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Singh only entered electoral politics relatively late in life. Now, as a member of the BJP, he faces the daunting task of leading a state still reeling from the aftermath of violence that claimed over 260 lives.
The communities involved, the majority Meitei and the minority Kuki-Zo, remain largely segregated, with thousands displaced from their homes. As Singh takes charge, the question on everyone's lips is: can he deliver the peace Manipur so desperately needs?
Opinions are divided. While some Manipur residents and analysts express hope in Singh's leadership, others remain sceptical. Even as Singh assumes office, tensions persist, with recent killings and protests highlighting the fragility of the situation.
The complexity of Manipur's unrest is further compounded by emerging tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Naga tribal groups. This adds another layer to the already divided state, with authorities imposing restrictions on gatherings to prevent further escalation.
Singh, a Meitei himself, has appointed three ministers from the Kuki-Zo community, including a deputy chief minister, in an attempt to balance ethnic representation. However, not everyone in the Kuki-Zo community is convinced. Mang Khongsai, a Kuki student leader, emphasizes that peace requires more than just the absence of violence; it demands trust, justice, and political sincerity.
Glady Vaiphei Hunjan, an adviser to the Kuki-Zo Women's Forum, echoes this sentiment, stating that peace cannot be imposed by maintaining the status quo. True leadership, she argues, must demonstrate moral clarity, acknowledge the state's failures, engage all stakeholders equally, and commit to a political solution rather than mere administrative management.
Manipur, with its population of around three million and an area slightly larger than Wales, has a long-standing reputation for producing elite athletes. This is often attributed to its strong sporting culture and community-run clubs, a tradition that Singh himself is a part of.
Sunzu Bachapatiyum, a Meitei filmmaker, expresses optimism about Singh's leadership, highlighting his working relationships with leaders across communities as a significant advantage. Journalist Kshetrimayum Premchand, also from the Meitei community, believes Singh can play a crucial role in bringing peace, praising his transparency and administrative skills.
Some analysts suggest that Singh's visit to a relief camp for internally displaced Kuki-Zo people in December 2025 was a pivotal moment, broadening his acceptability among Kuki-Zo legislators. However, Seram Rojesh, convener of the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee, emphasizes the need to disarm armed ethnic groups to achieve lasting peace.
Arambam Noni, an associate professor in Imphal, cautions against giving in to demands for separate administrations, warning of potential ripple effects given Manipur's complex cultural and ethnic diversities. The return of an elected government offers an opportunity for political engagement, but deep-rooted mistrust between communities remains a significant challenge.
