Regulators draw a line in the sand: Follow the rules or face penalties!
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is taking a firm stance on compliance, sending a clear message to stakeholders: adhere to regulations or be prepared for legal action. This bold statement came from Dr. Festus Ukadike, the South-East Zonal Director of NAFDAC, at a recent gathering of industry representatives in Owerri.
The event, a stakeholders' sensitisation programme, brought together a diverse group, including members from the National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicines, Table Water Producers, Community Pharmacists, Supermarket Operators, and various other associations. Dr. Ukadike emphasized NAFDAC's unwavering commitment to public health and its role as a regulator, ensuring that all products meet quality, safety, and efficacy standards.
Here's the catch: NAFDAC is urging stakeholders to go beyond the basics. They must maintain good hygiene and manufacturing practices, keep their licenses up-to-date, and ensure their operations align with guidelines. But it doesn't stop there. The agency is also focusing on storage and distribution practices, clinical claims, and debunking pseudoscientific claims about miracle cures.
And this is the part most people miss: Dr. Ukadike encourages everyone to be vigilant and report non-compliant suppliers. He suggests that even seemingly insignificant products like chin-chin or fried plantain should have NAFDAC registration numbers. This level of scrutiny is essential to NAFDAC's mission.
The agency's confidence in its sensitisation efforts is high, but it also promises to ramp up enforcement. Those producing or selling unsafe or unregistered products will be targeted. This tough stance is a response to the challenges faced by the industry, including substandard medical products, water quality issues, and poor hygiene practices.
Mrs. Helen Okanya, the Imo State Coordinator of NAFDAC, highlighted the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to address these issues. The goal is to improve product registration, information sharing, and supply chain monitoring.
