A Journey of Growth Amidst Challenges: Desert Jewels’ Celtic Cup Story
The Debmarine Desert Jewels may have returned from the 2025 Celtic Cup with a record of one win and two losses, but head coach Julene Meyer insists that this barely scratches the surface of what truly happened. This tournament was about far more than scores—it was a stage for the rise of a new generation of Namibian netball talent.
The competition brought together six nations—host Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Namibia—with Uganda ultimately claiming the championship. Yet for Namibia, the tournament was defined as much by the hurdles they faced off the court as by the play on it.
"From the outset, this tour was a test of resilience," Meyer reflected. "Several key starters were unavailable, club commitments blocked some players, and visa issues added another layer of complexity. Each of these challenges forced us to rethink our strategies and squad selections."
But Meyer sees these obstacles not as setbacks, but as opportunities. "True growth never happens when things are easy. We deliberately picked a young, relatively inexperienced squad brimming with potential. Seven players were new additions compared to our Dubai lineup. For example, we had the chance to debut Rejoice Kambonge and Miriam Johannes against top-10 international teams—a rare and invaluable experience," she said.
The coach lauded the team’s adaptability and determination in an unfamiliar environment. "There was remarkable development throughout the tour. Players who usually come off the bench stepped into starting roles. Our newcomers faced world-class opponents head-on. Every day I witnessed emotional growth, sharper game awareness, and stronger mental resilience," Meyer explained.
Another eye-opening aspect of the Celtic Cup was Namibia’s first real encounter with the European style of play and officiating, which required rapid adaptation. "Initially, interpreting the referees' calls was tricky, but our team improved continuously. On attack, we became more competitive, our error rate decreased, composure under pressure strengthened, and decision-making became more consistent," she noted.
Meyer also highlighted an important learning curve: the players initially allowed themselves to be intimidated by world rankings rather than focusing on their own skills. "This is part of gaining international experience. Rankings don't play the game—you do. We had some rough quarters that were hard to watch, but daily growth was evident, and that effort was key to our victory over Northern Ireland," she said.
Looking forward, Meyer sees this experience as foundational for the future, particularly as many of these players are expected to form the core of Namibia’s national team for the next decade. "I’m incredibly proud of their achievements. They now know they can compete with these nations. Standout performers like Uendjisuvera Kangumine, Grace Matyayi, and Corrie Mupenda truly shone," she shared.
She hopes that the team will receive the backing needed to compete in the upcoming Africa Netball Cup in Malawi, which will serve as their final major test before the World Cup qualifiers. "This journey has just begun," Meyer concluded, "and the lessons learned here will shape the next chapter of Namibian netball."
